Small Businesses Get a Jump-Start on eBay Small Businesses Get a Jump-Start on eBay Entrepreneurs and small businesses are smitten with eBay. The online auction giant has made a strong impact in the business arena, as a new study reveals 724,000 Americans say eBay is their primary source of income. A new report conducted by ACNielsen International Research reveals that about 1.5 million individuals say they supplement their income by selling on eBay. During the first quarter of 2005, eBay members in the U.S. sold merchandise worth about $10.6 billion. The report states that the number of eBay entrepreneurs jumped 68 percent since a comparable study was done in 2003. The online auction site is seen as a viable way to start, grow and operate a small business. The site can extend a company’s geographical and demographic reach. Jump-starting their own businesses is on the minds of many would-be entrepreneurs, according to the report. The survey reveals that 58 percent of Americans say they’ve dreamed of starting a business and becoming their own boss. The most common reason for wanting to start a business is to increase one’s personal income (66 percent of respondents), followed by increased independence (63 percent). The big barriers to starting a business are insufficient financial resources, cited by 49 percent of respondents, and satisfaction with their current situation (29 percent), the report states.
